Abstract

Teachers’ conceptions are beliefs or organizing frameworks that help them to understand, anticipate, and deal with situations that arise in their daily work. Studying teachers’ conceptions is important because they are a basis for promoting school change. In this paper, we analyze the conceptions of inclusive education held by a group of teachers from two elementary schools, located in the state of Mexico. The research was based on a multiple-case study, and we focus mainly on two elements of the conceptions: academic knowledge and experiential knowledge. The results show that concepts related to integration prevail in teachers’ beliefs along with some traces of inclusive education; in these outcomes factors such as the type of disability and the collaboration between teachers and staff of the Unit of Support Services for Mainstream Education (USAER for its Spanish acronym) play an important role. This situation is reinforced by the lack of pedagogical resources and teacher training on inclusive education, as well as the increasing bureaucratic procedures. Consequently, inclusion is considered a burden, which in turn hinders the shift toward conceptions that support the participation of all students.
