The lure of integration: the processes of differentiation, subjectivation and subalternización in educational devices for immigrant women

Abstract

Educational interventions designed for the inclusion of immigrant women in Spain are structured under the domination effects of differentiation processes with effects on the subjectivity of these sectors and in the structuring of a certain social subalternization. From the study of practices and discourses present in educational services, we analyze the mechanisms of differentiation in terms of gender, national origin and socioeconomic status. These processes has the effect the constitution of the category "Third World Woman", a "cultural other" that is necessary to educate to be insert in the society.

Catherine Galaz, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya

Doctora en Filosofía y Ciencias de la Educación (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona), Master en Educación (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona) y Master en Políticas Sociales y Gestión Local (Universidad Arsis). Actualmente trabaja como investigadora en el grupo Fractalidades en Investigación Crítica de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, es profesora de Psicología Social y de Educación Social de la "Universitat Oberta de Catalunya" y es técnica-asesora del Centro de Información y Recursos para las Mujeres (CIRD) del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona. Se ha especializado en estudios de género, movimientos trasnacionales, intervención social y tecnología desde una perspectiva crítica y poscolonial. Profesora invitada de Terapia Ocupacional de la Universidad de Chile.
